iPhone App BETA Testing

Published 7/12/2011 by Admin in iPhone Apps | iPhone SDK

I have just created an account with TestFlight which allows anyone with an iOS 4.0 or higher device become a beta tester for my apps.

To participate please follow this link: http://bit.ly/nZY1kk then follow the instructions and await the builds to become available.

The first app in testing is the app designed for School of Black Belts in Oldbury. Give it a try and see how you get on.

Thanks,

Fraser

Typeaholic is the latest edition to the iPhone App Store. Developed by a fellow MSc Student at London Metropolitan University, Typeaholic combines a typing game with physics, the words will fall from the top of the screen, player needs to type them before a word reaches the top of the screen.

After starting off fairly easy, the words start to fall much quicker and the challenge is on to type the words as quick as you can. The gamecentre integration makes this quite an addicive game as your high score is compared to others. Battle mode is great fun with the quicker typer making life much harder for their apponent.

Check out Typeaholic now on App Store:http://itunes.apple.com/app/typeaholic/id436702956?mt=8&ls=1

Using Dropbox for Backups on Mac OS X

I had been lookng for a nice easy backup solution for my University coursework which required minimal effort on my part and was cheap/free.

I signed up to Dropbox a while ago but never really started using it properly as I had to remember to drag files over to the folder for syncing. Then I came across this great guide on how to setup Automatic Backups on your Mac with Dropbox.

http://matthewlyle.com/mac/how-to-use-dropbox-and-automator-for-automatic-backup-of-multiple-folders/

If you're not yet signed up to Dropbox you can get an extra 250MB free with with link http://db.tt/zefDqXQ (I also get an extra 250MB so thanks in advance!)

There's a great guide on creating Custom Overlays for iOS MapKit at: http://shawnsbits.com/blog/2010/12/23/mapkit-overlays-session-1-overlay-map/

However it glosses over the part whereby you have to install Gdal. If your fairly new to Mac OS X and more familiar with a Windows background then you may need some extra info on how to go about it:

Download and install the Macports.dmg from http://www.macports.org/install.php

Once installed you will need to provide yourself root privilages if you dont have so already.

  • Start System Preferences and select "Accounts".
  • Under the list of users press the "Login Options", and then next to that press the "Join..." button next to Network Account Server. (You will not be joining a network account server, this is just the way to get to the Directory Utility).
  • Press the button to "Open Directory Utility..."
  • Once you launch the Directory Utility, however you do it, then enable the root account by doing the following:
  • Click on the Lock icon and give the Administrator password to authenticate.
  • Pull down the "Edit" menu to "Enable Root User"
  • Pull down the "Edit" menu to "Change Root Password..." and enter a good, strong password for the root user.
Once you have root enabled you will need to go load up terminal (Applications - Utilites - Terminal)

Then simply enter "sudo port install gdal"
If all goes well Macports should begin downloading and installing the most upto date version of Gdal.

Well I've been training for this since October. And although I haven't stuck to the training plan 100% things do seem to be going well. I've been using a brilliant iPhone App (Adidas miCoach) which has really helped with the motivation, providing vocal updates throughout a training session with time, distance and pace stats. There are a number of things which could be improved with this app, such as being able to edit a workout (if its stopped recording as I have had happen). However overall its a pretty solid app and well worth a download.

Now its only 3 weeks until the marathon so here's the push for some sponsorship. I'm running for Macmilan Cancer Support. Here's the progress so far:
